Trevor Brazile comes up big at NFR

Trevor Brazile became the Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association’s first Triple Crown winner since 1983 as he finished the 49th annual Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas last December with a tie-down roping gold buckle, giving him three world titles in one year. Earlier in the going he clinched the all-around cowboy world championship, and a month before nabbed the world title in steer roping. Going into the final two rounds of the NFR with the most pressure on him of any contestant, Brazile hung on to win the tie-down title in Round 10 and complete the PRCA’s first Triple Crown since Roy Cooper in 1983.

Brazile, who hails from Decatur, Texas, won his second straight steer roping world title on Nov. 3 with $88,963 in earnings, and wrapped up his fifth all-around gold buckle after Round 8. He had some trouble in the final round, missing with his first loop and recording a 15.4-second time. Despite that setback, his fifth-place finish gave him $189,920 in tie-down roping earnings, enough to earn the gold buckle by just $4,277 over Houston Hutto. “It’s awesome,” said Brazile, who finished the season with a PRCA single-season record $425,115 in earnings. “You’re talking about [Triple Crown winners] Roy Cooper and Jim Shoulders, and they’re the greatest cowboys to ever live. Anytime you’re on the same page as those guys, it’s a great accomplishment.”

Country music artist Trent Willmon will make his silver screen debut in summer ’08 with the theatrical release of Palo Pinto Gold, a family friendly, action-packed Western set in the late 1800s. Principal filming wrapped earlier this year in Texas, and Willmon is contributing music to the movie's soundtrack. Check the film’s Web site at www.palopintogold.com for updates and a trailer.

Willmon takes on the lead role of Jake Landers, a Texas rancher turned ranger, in a classic battle of good over evil. Willmon is joined by Roy Clark, Mel Tillis, former Texas Ranger Joaquin Jackson, Hollywood veteran Billy Hart, and Kinky Friedman in a special guest appearance (playing the governor of Texas).

Willmon released his third studio album, Broken In (Compadre Records), in February. He is host of CMT’s reality show America’s Top Cowboy. For more, visit www.trentwillmon.com

Emerging from a herd of 120 Longhorn cattle driven by 10 cowboys on horseback down Washington Boulevard in downtown Detroit, the 2009 Dodge Ram made its debut at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in early January.

“Since the dawn of the ‘big rig’ look, Dodge Ram has always been a gamechanger,” said Jim Press, vice chairman and president, Chrysler LLC. “The all new 2009 Dodge Ram is packed with full-size pickup firsts and best-in-class features.” For more information visit www.Dodge.com.

In an issue that celebrates the cowgirl, we'd like to recognize another horsewoman who's making great strides. Sue Sally Hale broke the gender boundary in 1972 as the first professional female polo player. In 2005, her daughter Sunny Hale founded the Women's Championship Tournament.

Today, more women than ever are playing polo, and competition is fierce. Check out the action April 2-6 in Wellington, Fla., and visit www.us-polo.org or www.wctpolo.com for more information.
