Update on Toby
La_cowgirl21 — Thu, 2010-03-11 19:42
So I've posted in another blog about the dog I was given as a birthday present this year. Turns out I have a pretty smart dog on my hands....He's smart in that he seems to able to escape out of the pen no matter what we do to keep him inside it lol. Until we get a pen built up closer to the house, he is staying where dad keeps the hunting dogs when they are at my house instead of at my brothers. This dog has chewed wire, wood, and a metal fence just to get out. I did not think this was possible! lol. He chewed on the fastenings that were holding the wire at the end of the gate down and formed a hole that he was able to squeeze out of. He gets out and then I open the door up at the house and hes there waiting for me wagging his tail like he's saying "I'm baacckk." I could just leave him running loose if I didn't live on such a busy highway and I knew he would not go to the road. Ive been letting him out each day and letting him run free that way he gets a feel for the place and he will mainly stay around the house so that I can leave him out without worrying about him. When he was given to me, he had a metal collar around his neck. Now that he has been playing the Houdini game and has been squeezing through tight spaces, his collar has snapped into and broken into pieces. So I am replacing that with a different type of collar now. One that will not just snap.
I laughed the first time he got out (first night that is, he got out twice that night). I had him on a leash and was waiting for my dad to walk to the back with his tools so that we could fix the pen where Toby had chewed on. I knew it was my dad that was walking towards us...Toby obviously did not. He got real still when he saw my dad walking around the carport looking for tools, and even got where he was standing ahead of me. Well dad gets closer to us and Toby starts barking his head off! Not the hey I want attention bark...more like Hey just who are you bark....I get him calmed down and of course Dad looks at me and says "If he ever bites me.....and leaves it as that...there wasn't any need for him to finish the sentence because I knew the answer to that. Of course later dad laughed about it and I added the remark, "Daddy you know he was just protecting his mistress." I found it funny...Dad not so much. lol.
Things have definitely been interesting since he has been around. That I can say atleast!

Toby
La_cowgirl21 — Mon, 2010-07-26 15:46Recently I have learned that my dog hates cats! Someone dropped off a cat near my house and since we are the first place when they are back tracking my way they stop at our house first. This cat decided to follow me and my dad out to feed the animals and came within an inch of loosing its tail. Toby was more worried about getting to this intruder as he saw it, than eating his dinner that I had brought out to him. The cat walked in front of the gate and Toby bit at his tail and just barely missed. The only thing that saved this cats life is that my brother came to get it right before dad was about to open the gates and let Toby have some fun! LOL!

Wireless Fence
annieoakley — Thu, 2010-03-11 20:13What about a wireless fence. I am not really sure how they work. The dog can run around free. I think he has on a collar and if he gets past the fence area it gives a shock. That does seem kinda of mean to me. Anyway it was just an idea.
Well I have thought about
La_cowgirl21 — Fri, 2010-03-12 00:00Well I have thought about that but this dog is so big and strong i wonder if it would bother him lol! That and thought of a zip line but my dad says that the best thing would be the reg fence. Though i have a feeling that he's gona find a way out if it too!

Wire line
Cowgirl at heart — Fri, 2010-03-12 13:24My father-in-law would put his dog on a a long leash and then hung a wire high above (like a zip line) from tree to tree or post to past in different areas of the yard and latch the leash to it so the dog would have a lot of area to roam and would not have to worry about the dog getting out of the yard. And the wire held up just fine.
I think at some point thats
