Flora — Tue, 2010-07-06 11:46I have always been a fan of western whiskies since I was old enough to drink. They are usually some of the smoothest and best aged whisky that one can enjoy. I was wondering what is everyone's favorite overall? I am looking for some new ones to try. Flashlightz
Western whiskies
GoldBuckleClubWhisky — Tue, 2010-07-06 20:24Hi Flora,
One of my favourites, apart from my own of course, is the St George single malt. It was featured at the last Whiskies of the West event in Ellensburg, Washington, and was amongst the top two of the eight that were presented. Expensive, but well worth the trouble and the price! More information at the link below:

Gold Buckle Club whisky wins gold medal and 'Best Spirit' trophy
GoldBuckleClubWhisky — Fri, 2010-05-14 13:2330 April 2010
For Immediate Release
Gold Buckle Club whisky claims gold medal and ‘best spirit’ trophy
HOOD RIVER, Oregon -- The Ellensburg Distillery in Ellensburg, Washington won a gold medal for its GOLD BUCKLE CLUB whisky at the NorthWest Wine & Spirits Summit. A single-malt, single-barrel, cask-strength whisky, GOLD BUCKLE CLUB took further honors when it was awarded the ‘Best Spirit’ Crystal Rose trophy by the eleven judges present at the three-day competition.
GOLD BUCKLE CLUB whisky is an all-barley whisky that was double-distilled and then barrel-matured for a full year. Each batch of the spirit is aged in two new American oak half-barrels for six months, and then is finished in a single prior-use Sherry cask for an additional six months. A limited quantity of signed and numbered bottles is still available from the distillery at the original price of $110.00. The second edition will not be released until September 1.
"I am elated at the good news," said master distiller Berle "Rusty" Figgins, Jr.," and it just shows what a new industry in Washington can achieve in such a short time. We owe much of our success to the high-quality grains grown here and the enormous consumer interest in ultra-premium, honestly made spirits."
The 2010 NorthWest Wine & Spirits Summit, in its fifteenth year, was held at the historic Columbia Gorge Hotel in Hood River on April 25th through 27th. The NorthWest Wine & Spirits Summit is one of America’s leading wine and spirits judging events and is the largest wine and spirits competition held in the Pacific Northwest. 1,129 different entries of wine and spirits were entered at this year's competition.
The Ellensburg Distillery, Washington’s first craft distillery to make both brandy and whisky, was the state’s second distillery to become licensed under the new craft distillery law. The distillery sponsors the Whiskies of the West tasting, held annually at the Clymer Museum of Western Art in Ellensburg. It also produces El Chalán brandy, the winner of last year’s Crystal Rose trophy.
The distillery can be reached by telephone at 509.925.1295, or by electronic mail at nfo@TheEllensburgDistillery.com.

ahh hah!
nevada4x4 — Mon, 2010-04-12 03:34Good reading. I had heard from a bartender friend once before how Pendleton was kind of a "fake" meaning they are somewhat misrepresenting who they really are. I recently have become a bit of a fan of knob creek. A few more taste tests and Ill have my lists complete for my next "stock up." Also, I have a friend who is all about the bulleit (if thats how you spell it) and insists its the cats meow.

"Frontier" whiskey
GoldBuckleClubWhisky — Sun, 2010-04-11 18:35Probably one of the best examples of old-timey packaging is found in a bottle of Bulleit bourbon, which calls itself "frontier" whiskey. The product inside is some good stuff, boy!
There was a time long ago when Kentucky actually was the wild frontier, but we know that it's out here in the West that most folks still consider being the frontier. Frontier as a word comes to us from the French (frontière) and it simply means the border or boundary. We mean it to imply the border between the known and the unknown, or the union of states and its western territories. These days, the frontier is now generally referred to as the land west of the Mississippi River, long after the West was won.
Gold Buckle Club, made in Ellensburg, Washington, is also a frontier-style whisky, but it is the real McCoy. Crafted out West from only Washington-grown barley and native brewer's yeast and high-purity water, the brand "honours those sturdy folk who ride work and play hard....here's to those who blaze a new trail every day."
The slogan for the brand, proclaimed on every bottle, is "Hang on to your hat!" which could signify a couple of things. An experienced rider never loses his hat, or, "prepare yourself for something that is great tasting and goes down nicely." Some folks also say that the slogan refers to how windy it can get in the Kittitas Valley. All three things happen to be true.
I get asked if Pendleton is similarly a frontier whisky. No. Pendleton has a loyal following, but it is made east of the Mississippi River, and north of the border in Windsor, Ontario.
What? Pendleton is actually Canadian whisky?
Pendleton whisky, a great marketing success story, is Canadian Club whisky that did not make the grade at their distillery and is offered for sale on the bulk market to Hood River Distillers in Oregon.
So, what's the connection to Pendleton?
$0.50 per bottle gets paid to the Pendleton Rodeo Association for the use of the "Let 'er Buck" slogan. That's the only connection. It's not made in that great town, not bottled there, but it is sure sold there and all over the West. Lots of it, so it is a true marketing success story, because it turns out that consumers don't care where their favorite whisky is made, so long as they identify with what the brand stands for. Or do they? I will wager a bet that whisky drinkers do care, and that they derive plenty of gratification from knowing and trusting the maker.
I invite you to go have a look at the very modest www.GoldBuckleClubwhisky.com , and get a feel for the brand that you will grow to love as the real McCoy it always promises to be! Just 300 bottles per barrel, and always bottled just one barrel at a time. Mention American Cowboy magazine or their Web site, and make an appointment for a VIP tour and tasting whenever you are in Ellensburg! ( info@TheEllensburgDistillery.com )
All the best from Gold Buckle Club frontier-style whisky, and please, hang on to your hat!

A List of Pretenders
GoldBuckleClubWhisky — Tue, 2010-04-13 14:05I've been told off-site about more of these supposed frontier whiskies, and it seems that there are a few impostor brands, positioning themselves as "Western" whiskies. all of them made in Ontario, Canada, and all of them bottled out West, dressed up in Western "clothing."
Here they are:
Pendleton (bottled in Hood River, Oregon)
Snake River Stampede (bottled in Beaverton, Oregon)
8 Seconds (bottled in San Jose, California)
Insist on the real McCoy:

hey there
nevada4x4 — Sun, 2010-04-04 23:42Im new and joined this group because im a whiskey fan. I have to admit im not all that keen on "western" rye or "gold buckle" good stuff, but I'd like to learn. Say, if im a fan off single barrel jack (assuming ya get a good barrel) what western would you suggest i try? Thanks, any tips or direction would be appreciated. Any excuse to sip more whiskey right? hah!
"I've always been crazy, but it keeps me from goin insane!"
I would recommend Old
Kokanee — Sat, 2010-05-29 08:23I would recommend Old Overholt Rye. It's make in KY so it's not exactly western, but seeing as how everyone used to drink Rye I think that counts.
In my experience Old Overholt is the best available outside of Russell Reserve Rye which costs around $30 a bottle so it's not a regular member of my drinking stuff.
hey there
GoldBuckleClubWhisky — Wed, 2010-04-07 19:49Hi Nevada4x4,
Here's a recommendation for you: try a Wild Turkey Rye (101 proof), and see what you think. It's a great drop of 'skey, and it's spicy and some would say peppery. Their bourbon is good, but the rye is nothing short of fantastic!
All the best,

for your consideration
Grant — Sat, 2010-03-20 09:10not everybody can afford it. i had the pleasure of tasting Gold Buckle Club whisky with Rusty himself at the Ellensburg Cowboy Gathering. i thought it was real good, and being "cask proof" (% alc by volume) it doesn't waste any time gettin' you there.
Now friends, we're talking about a handmade item here, the same as any other craftsman, whether it's a silversmith, or a saddler, or a hat maker. sometimes (not every time mind you)
good isn't cheap, and cheap isn't good....
All i'm really saying here is, people spend money every day on things that my Grandpa would've called frivolous..it doesn't make them dumb or bad....it only means that not everybody can afford it...
How much did YOUR hat cost? some folks would say "that's WAY too much".....get it?

What????
pdfangus — Wed, 2010-03-17 04:55You got to be kidding me.
110.00 for a bottle of whiskey.
this high end cowboy consumer marketing stuff is just going insane.
I can buy 11 bottles of Old Overholt rye whiskey for that price.
will get the same result. the Old Overhot is a good treatment for minor maladies and snake bite. this high end stuff must cure cancer.

Tex Expatriate — Thu, 2010-05-13 10:30I'm with you all the way. I like sour mash whiskey, myself, but I can't drink any of it straight. I mix it with water. Sour mash and branch. The cheapest I know about is Ten High, and it's damned good with water.
HIGH END COWBOY???
Concretecowboy — Wed, 2010-03-17 10:35I have to agree with you, Jim.
Not just in the consumer marketing stuff being insane but also the profit that a few seek to make from an 'image'.
I have seen many, many studies where the labels are removed and people could not tell the difference between the high price stuff and the plain everyday item. It is all imagination of what one wants to believe is 'better' because it cost more.
Now, I am not saying this product is not the best. I just get tired of some people thinking you can buy 'better' and make yourself 'better' with more money spent. When you read the content label and the making process, they are all the same. No matter what it might be (even in people), a pig dressed up in silk is still a pig.
Now, I have to agree $110 a
nighthawksh — Wed, 2010-03-17 15:13Now, I have to agree $110 a bottle is way too high for me, but I must take exception to the comment that they are all equal.
I can easily tell the difference between good booze and cheap booze,,,, at least until I've had 3 or 6.
Now, I have to agree $110 a
SaddlebackMtn — Wed, 2010-03-24 17:33I have found bunches of fantastic single barrel and small batch Bourbons and Ryes for $25 to $50. In that price range, I can guarantee you a nice smooth and tasty sippin' whiskey. Has anyone tried Mountain West Colorado Rye ?
Talkin' about good bourbon has my mouth watering !
Mine seems to be...
Cowgirl at heart — Wed, 2010-03-17 17:25Mine seems to be 2 or 3 drinks, but I am getting to be a little bit of a light weight the older I get lol! Is it or is it not the old saying you start with the cheap stuff and when you notice them getting three sheets to the wind is when you bring out the good stuff?
Introducing Gold Buckle Club frontier-style whisky
GoldBuckleClubWhisky — Tue, 2010-03-16 19:11Taming the Wild West required the skills of wranglers and well-drillers, farmers and millers, brewers and distillers. Celebrated as the finest whisky ever made in the West, Gold Buckle Club frontier-style whisky honours those sturdy folk who ride, work and play hard. Here's to those who blaze a new trail every day, and.....hang on to your hat!
Gold Buckle Club whisky - brewed from native barley, twice-distilled, matured in a double-wood process and bottled, corked, beeswax-sealed, then labelled and put up in a fire-branded, Douglas fir box....all by hand. Oh, and each bottle is hand-numbered and signed by the master distiller himself, right here in Ellensburg, Washington, voted amongst the "Top Twenty Places to Live in the West" by American Cowboy magazine (April/May issue).
$110.00/bottle, and available by writing to info@TheEllensburgDistillery.com.
