All aboard for murder and mystery on the Royal Gorge Route Railway
Ride a scenic railway from Canon City, Colorado, for a who-dunnit dinner
By Davalynn Spencer
Dinner and a movie? How about a moving dinner, served aboard the Royal Gorge Route Railway that snakes through the narrow canyon of Colorado’s rushing Arkansas River?
Like a great time machine, the vintage locomotive pulls more than a dozen cars out of Canon City along the 1880s route of the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and into the heart of the Rocky Mountain west.
Smooth as water on glass, it slips along the silver rails past skeletons of miner’s dreams and an ancient wooden flume. The canyon tightens to 30 feet, and the train pauses on Hanging Bridge, suspended above the roaring Arkansas.
Passengers press out to the open-top cars to see the tiny thread of the world’s highest suspension bridge more than 1,000 feet above. And as they make their way back to linen-clothed tables laden with prime rib and grilled salmon, actors mingle among them, peppering their remarks with motive and mayhem against the background of clinking wine glasses.
In the elegantly replicated 1930s dining car, guests watch aghast as the principal character clutches his throat and breathes his last on the carpeted walkway of the stately car.
Darkness falls around the train as silently as the killer’s hand, and while several solve the murder, the train slips past the lighted stone walls of old Territorial Prison and back to Santa Fe Depot.
Who done it? Ride the rails to find out. Murder Mystery rides are scheduled through October, with possible additional dates to be added. Cost is $110 per person. The Royal Gorge Route Railway offers several other packages, including lunch and dinner trip, and a Santa Express. See royalgorgeroute.com for details.
