The greatest places to live in the West
Kevin Carmody
What is home? A state of mind? A front-porch view? A couple of acres to call your own? Whether you’re retiring, relocating, or looking for room to grow, American Cowboy has found the places where Old West charm, open rangeland, and outdoor activities come together like nowhere else.
Salinas, Calif.
In this central California coastal city, you can take a dip in the Pacific Ocean and then watch top-ranked cowboys compete for glory at California Rodeo Salinas, which celebrates its centennial in July—all in the same day. Located in the Salinas Valley in Monterey County, Salinas has a moderate, cool climate with little rainfall. The town has earned the nickname “America’s Salad Bowl,” thanks to a thriving agricultural industry, yet it’s not isolated, only 100 miles south of San Francisco and 325 miles north of Los Angeles. The community is rich in Spanish and Old West traditions, and the small-town charm and relaxed lifestyle draw many visitors to the antique shops and boutiques in the renovated Oldtown Salinas. Living in Salinas is also affordable, with the average single-family house going for $250,000. Or, take a look at land in nearby Prunedale, which goes for $20,000–$40,000 per acre, depending on the terrain. A perfect marriage of old and new West, Salinas has more than just great weather.
Brawley, Calif.
This SoCal community—located two hours east of San Diego—is drenched in sun, if not rain. The annual Cattle Call Rodeo highlights a year that’s filled with several other rodeo and horsemanship events, and nearby Wiest Lake offers great waterskiing and fishing. This area has something for everyone.
Chico, Calif.
Located 90 miles north of Sacramento, this growing community combines a rich Native
American and Gold Rush legacy with a contemporary feel. There are spacious parks, historic museums, and each October, the traditional Chico Palio—modeled after Italy’s centuries-old Siena Palio horse race—kicks off the annual arts festival.
Santa Maria, Calif.
Winner of an All-American City award from the National Civic League, Santa Maria is about
halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. This seaside town is known for cool ocean
breezes, wineries, and thick-cut Santa Maria-style barbecue. This culinary masterpiece, cooked over red oak coals, traces back to the Santa Maria Valley ranches of the mid 1800s. Today, it’s served in many local restaurants, as well as at annual events like the Elks Rodeo.
Sacramento, Calif.

Just add dressing: The Salinas Valley, a.k.a. "America's salad bowl," where most of America's salad greens are grown.
